Let's Talk About Autophagy

Autophagy is one of the body's most remarkable built-in maintenance systems. The word literally means "self-eating," but don't let that description fool you. Autophagy isn't destructive—it's restorative. It's the way healthy cells identify damaged or worn-out parts, break them down, recycle what is still useful, and remove what no longer serves the body.
Think of it like a renovation crew. Before building something new, the crew doesn't simply construct over damaged walls or rotten wood. They first remove the debris, salvage what can be reused, and create a solid foundation for healthy rebuilding. Our cells work in much the same way. Rather than indiscriminately destroying everything, autophagy is a highly organized process that clears away damaged cellular components while recycling valuable materials. This continual cleanup helps maintain healthier, more efficient cells.
Why Does Autophagy Matter?
As we age, our bodies become less efficient at clearing away damaged cellular material. Over time, this buildup can contribute to declining cellular function. While aging is inevitable, supporting the body's natural repair systems may help us age with better health.
In her book Good Energy, Dr. Casey Means writes that "75 percent of deaths and 80 percent of health care costs are driven by obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other preventable and reversible metabolic conditions." Her message is that metabolic health influences nearly every aspect of our well-being.
Researchers continue to explore the relationship between metabolic dysfunction and conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia, autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and even hearing loss. Although these diseases have many contributing factors, improving metabolic health is increasingly recognized as an important part of prevention and overall wellness.
Supporting Autophagy
By following a well layed out ketogenic system or carnivore diet is one of the main ways to reset our metabolic health. We assess how our bodies are handeling these dietary changes by measuring the balance between glucose and ketones. Two commonly discussed tools are the Glucose Ketone Index (GKI) and Dr. Annette Bosworth's Dr. Boz Ratio (DBR). These measurements estimate how effectively the body is producing and using ketones while keeping glucose at appropriate levels.
According to Dr. Bosworth's approach, a DBR of 80 or below may indicate conditions that support weight loss and may coincide with increased autophagy. Ratios below 40 are suggested to reflect deeper therapeutic ketosis, where the immune system may receive additional support and autophagy may become more active. For individuals facing serious neurological conditions or cancer, Dr. Bosworth discusses pursuing ratios of 20 or lower under close medical supervision as part of a broader therapeutic strategy.
Reducing carbohydrate intake is one way many people improve metabolic flexibility and encourage nutritional ketosis. Lower carbohydrate intake may also help reduce chronically elevated insulin and blood glucose, two important factors in metabolic health.
Autophagy is not a magic solution, nor is it the only piece of the health puzzle. But it is one of the body's elegant repair mechanisms—one that reminds us our bodies were designed not only to function, but also to heal, renew, and restore themselves when given the right conditions.
